Depuis la fin des années 80, les œuvres de Josée Pellerin ont été présentées lors d’événements au Québec, au Canada, aux États-Unis, en France, au Mexique et au Japon. Boursière pour des projets de création, de déplacements et de résidences de recherche, elle a entre autres publié des livres d’artiste, réalisé des œuvres pour le Web, participé à des explorations collectives artistiques et œuvré dans le milieu des centres d’artistes. Plus récemment, ses vidéos expérimentales ont été primées dans plusieurs festivals internationaux en ligne. Elle vit et travaille à Montréal où elle enseigne à l’École des arts visuels et médiatiques de l’Université du Québec.***Mon travail s’inscrit dans une production visuelle alliant des procédés dits traditionnels tels que la peinture et le dessin, à des techniques permettant une reproduction sérielle des images, soit la photographie argentique, numérique, la vidéographie et la captation sonore. Cette recherche fonctionne sur le mode de la superposition : celui du chevauchement de couches distinctes définissant la composition formelle et celui d’une imagerie qui rapproche des éléments du quotidien à des réalités fictionnelles. *** J’explore et exploite les conventions inhérentes à la photographie en reconsidérant celle-ci comme un objet en construction. Qu’il s’agisse d’altérations du support papier, de photographies rephotographiées plusieurs fois, de projections lumineuses, d’addition de textes, ou de montage de collages vidéographiques, ces manipulations remettent en cause le processus interne de fabrication de l’image, favorisent l’accidentel et me permettent de perturber leur propre temporalité. L’ensemble des déplacements entre ces avenues favorise un langage hybride où cette modalité bricolée s’impose davantage comme matière première. L’instant non–décisif peut s’incarner dans une présence matérielle de l’image qui sous-tend l’exercice du regard, la restauration du voir. En la travestissant considérablement, il m’importe de faire ressortir la nature multiple de la photographie et ainsi lui forger une « aura » singulière. |
Since the end of the 1980s, the works of Josée Pellerin have been presented at events in Quebec, Canada, the United States, France, Mexico and Japan. A grant holder for creative projects, travel and research residencies, she has also published artist books, produced works for the Web, participated in collective artistic explorations and has been active in artist-run centers, among others. More recently, his experimental videos have won awards at several international online festivals. She lives in Montreal where she teaches at the School of Visual and Media Arts at the University of Quebec.***My work is a visual production that combines the traditional disciplines of painting and drawing with techniques allowing the serial reproduction of images such as argentic, digital photography, videography and sound recording. The process for this work relies on a method of superimposition: that of overlapping distinct layers, which defines the formal composition, and that of the imagery, which brings together everyday elements and fictional realities. *** I explore and exploit the conventions inherent to photography, reconsidering them as an object to construct. Whether it involves retouching the paper medium, re-photographing the photographs several times, using light projections, adding texts, or montages of videographic collages, these manipulations question the internal manufacturing process of the image, favoring the accidental and allowing me to disrupt their own temporality. The ensemble of these shifts between these avenues furthers a hybrid language in which this cobbling together modality is imposed more as raw material. The non–decisive moment can be embodied in a material presence of the image that underlies the exercise of the gaze, the restoration of seeing. By twist it considerably, it is important for me to bring out the multiple nature of photography and thus forge a unique “aura” for it. Translated by Janet Logan |
